"Unnerving atmospheric horror trance from Florida’s Goth Professor . I really didn’t know what to expect wading into these swampy waters. If you want to invite 9 guests to a mansion, feed them delicacies, then commit a murder everyone remaining is left to solve. This is the soundtrack you need." --Sounds and Shadows dot com
Thank you to the crickets, who were recorded at the same location as the cover photo in Viking, Florida.
A drone of crickets punctuated with menacing bass stabs. A sparse break beat under icy synth pads. Cursed whispers and undead groans from the periphery. Urgent Solina string arpeggiation quarrels with the gloom, then vanishes beneath a dirgeful bass and guitar bridge, only to circle back to the beginning of the damp, green labyrinth. This is "Swamp Gothic," the second single from Gothic Lofi Beats to Broodingly Bob Your Head to. Gothic Lofi is the forthcoming debut album from Goth Professor, a music producer and literature professor who blends the idioms of dark lofi hip hop, glitch, and trip hop with Gothic, darkwave, and industrial music. Swirling Mellotron choirs, filtered Solina string sounds, echoing chamber instruments, and haunting analog synths sweep across overdriven 808s, downsampled drum kits, and fuzzy basses and guitars. Disembodied voices from samples and original vocal recordings punctuate the atmosphere with impressionistic vocal phrases. A colleague from the anthropology department reports, "It's like the Phantasm soundtrack but with some bounce to it." "Gothic Lofi" is what happens when your Gothic literature professor spins too much DJ Shadow, Boards of Canada, Soft Moon, and Dead Can Dance while reading his special editions of Radcliffe and Walpole.
